Sketch of a Middle Ages Castle

Castle Life

Sara Goettke

Have you ever thought what life would be like living in a Castle? Well, from stories that you have read it may have seemed like a perfect life, but it wasn't. You had to protect the castle and it's inhabitants when you were under siege.
There were many different types of Castles. One type was called the Square Castle:
-1st floor: stores & soldiers quarters
-2nd floor: kitchen & chapel
-3rd floor: Great Hall = where banquets and parties were held for the Lord & Lady
-4th floor: Lord and family bedrooms
Another type of Castle is called the Polygonal Castle:
-1st floor: prison cell-2nd floor: lobby
-3rd floor: kitchen, lower hall and chapel
-4th floor: Upper Hall (same as Great Hall)
-5th floor: Nobles rooms

Another type of Castle is called the Concentric. This type of castle is not like the other castle types. Wrapping around the castle is a moat. It has a castle dock, sea gate, and an innerward. An innerward in a wall around the castle with a larger wall outside of that (outer curtain wall). Also, it has the Southeast and Southwest towers along with the Northeast and Northwest towers. The chapel is located between the Northeast and Southeast towers. In the chapel, there were scenes from the bible painted on the walls. After 1350, chapels started having stained glass windows. Many people attented the church service that was sung in Latin.

Many people were needed to keep the castle clean and ready for guests. The two main people of the castle are the Lord and his Lady. Below them were doctors, kennel workers, stable hands, groom, and falconer. Both stable hands and grooms worked with horses, but the groom had more time with the horses. The falconer is someone who uses falcons in battle or takes care of the falcons.

One event surrounding Castle Life was the War of Roses. The War of Roses was also known as the Civil War for those days. The War of Roses lasted for 30 years. It ended with a fire. Another event surrounding Castle Life was the Black Death. The Black was a disease that spread throughout Europe in the Middle Ages. Everyone, rich or poor, was inflicted. Some people believed that if they suffered not only because of the Black Death that God would heal them.

Castle Life impacted the world to day because it showed that you don't have to have money or land to be a leader because the Lord and Lady weren't the real leaders in Middle Ages. The Priest was the political figure. So this got rid of all the Kings and Queens in the United States. In Europe, however, Queen Elizabeth II is still queen but doesn't have any power.

The peasants wore wrags and weren't very clean. As you get higher in the rankings, the better clothes people had. The Lord and his Lady wore very nice clothing, no one but the Lord and his Lady were allowed to wear this clothing.

The Lady wore bright colored clothing with a long billowing train. The train is like a piece of cloth that follows behind the Lady when she walks.

The Lord wears pants almost like tights that are brightly colored. He wears a vest that is highly decorated and shows where he is in the social class. Covering the vest is a jacket also brightley colored and highley decorated.
